Cathy Williams was born into slavery in Missouri in 1842. She escaped to freedom in 1861 and disguised herself as a man in Free Download to join the Union Army. She fought for two years with the 38th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment, and was wounded in action at the Battle of Honey Springs.
After the war, Williams returned to Missouri and worked as a teacher and a nurse. She died in 1923, and was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
