Urey's discovery of deuterium played a crucial role in the development of the Big Bang theory, which posits that the universe originated from a single, infinitesimally dense point. Deuterium, being a primordial element formed shortly after the Big Bang, provided empirical evidence supporting this cosmological model.

Nucleosynthesis and the Origin of the Elements

Urey's groundbreaking work on isotopes and deuterium laid the foundation for his pioneering contributions to the field of nucleosynthesis. Nucleosynthesis is the process by which the elements heavier than hydrogen are created, and Urey's research focused on understanding the mechanisms responsible for this cosmic alchemy.
