Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, served from 1913 to 1921. He was a prominent figure in the Progressive Era, a period of social and political reform in the early 20th century. Wilson's policies had a profound impact on the nation, both domestically and internationally.

Domestic Policies

Wilson's domestic policies were known as the "New Freedom." He aimed to reduce the power of trusts and monopolies, promote fair competition, and protect the rights of workers. Some of his key domestic policies included:

  • Clayton Antitrust Act (1914): Strengthened antitrust laws by prohibiting certain business practices that restrained trade, such as price fixing and exclusive dealing.
  • Federal Reserve Act (1913): Established the Federal Reserve System, the central bank of the United States, to regulate the monetary system and stabilize the economy.
  • Federal Trade Commission Act (1914): Created the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate and prevent unfair or deceptive business practices.
  • Keating-Owen Child Labor Act (1916): Prohibited the interstate shipment of goods produced by child labor.
  • Workmen's Compensation Act (1916): Provided workers with compensation for injuries or illnesses sustained on the job.

Foreign Policy

Wilson's foreign policy was guided by the principles of idealism and international cooperation. He believed that the United States should promote democracy and human rights abroad and work to prevent war. Some of his key foreign policy initiatives included:

  • Neutrality Proclamation (1914): Declared the United States' neutrality in World War I, which began in Europe in 1914.
  • Lusitania Incident (1915): A German submarine sank the British passenger ship Lusitania, killing over 1,000 people, including 128 Americans. This incident brought the United States closer to war with Germany.
  • Zimmermann Telegram (1917): A secret telegram from Germany to Mexico was intercepted by British intelligence. It proposed that Mexico form an alliance with Germany and attack the United States. This telegram was a major factor in the United States' decision to enter World War I.
  • Fourteen Points (1918): Wilson's plan for a just and lasting peace after World War I. The Fourteen Points called for the end of secret treaties, freedom of the seas, and the establishment of a League of Nations.
  • League of Nations (1919): An international organization founded after World War I to promote cooperation and prevent war. The United States did not join the League of Nations, but Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to create it.

Legacy

Wilson's policies had a lasting impact on the United States. His domestic reforms helped to break up monopolies, protect workers, and promote fair competition. His foreign policy initiatives helped to shape the world Free Download after World War I.
